Cricket EquipmentBTCC Parents often ask for the coaches guidance in what to buy for their youngster in terms of equipment and this page offers a few pointers as to what to look for. At the very outset I would say that when choosing a bat the player should if at all possible pick up the blade and get a feel for it. If the plyaer is not comfortable with the bat then performance may suffer. To this end we are indeed blessed in Loughborough to have an excellent specialist independent retailer for cricket equipment in Talent Cricket. There is a link on this page where you can get more details of what services and products they offer. The owners Stuart and Paul Widdowson are both well known local cricketers who have a wealth of expertise in the area of cricket equipment and what to look for. There are of course other reputable cricket specialists for your consideration. Wisden and All Out cricket magazines are a good source of information. In terms of a bat you basically get what you pay for. The lowest grade willow is Kashmir and most starter bats are made of this. It should be noted however that they are only really suitable for the softball game. For hard ball (and please try to only use English quartered cricket balls) English Willow blades tend to be favoured. Look for a nice staight grain in the wood. Generally the tighter the grain the the more springy the blade. Some players favour this but it comes at a price I am afraid as these bats do not tend to last as long as thoise with a wider grain. The size and weight of the bat is very important. Too heavy a bat can lead to the blade not coming through straight with the resulting poor outcome. Get your youngster to pick up some bats and get a feel for them. Ask the retailer to check height and bat size. Youth bats start at Size 1 end at Harrow and U13's tend to use these as the last age group. A good junior bat retails in the range £70 to £100. There are of course cheaper bats but you do get what you pay for. All bats should be knocked in after oiling if needed. Follow the guidance of the specialist retailer or the manufacturer.Other equipment such as helmets (a must for hardball) pads, gloves, bags and the trusty box or abdominal guard are also to be found at specialist cricket stores. I would also recommend purchasing a pair of box briefs. At Barrow we do not aloow players to bat in boxer shorts as this is dangerous as well as being uncomfortable. If you want to buy a cricket ball then Readers or Dukes make the best. We should not forget the younger player and I would say that Kwik Cricket equipment that comprises plastic bats and balls are really first class for U7 to U10 to learn the game game safely. If you have any doubt ask someone that knows and don't feel embarrassed! Take advice and make sure your purchase is what your youngster requires and that you get good value for your money.
