Report CF2008

If proof was needed of the success of Barrow Town’s continued promotion of junior cricket, it was certainly evident in the huge turn out for this years’ GroundForce event. Saturday 5th April was a day when the weather could have been kinder. Despite this, unprecedented numbers of junior cricketers and their parents along with established seniors rallied at the ground to prepare the facilities for the forthcoming season. In between frequent dashes for cover from heavy showers, a team of juniors of all sizes, treated over 200 metres of fencing. A brilliant effort in its own right without even mentioning upwards of £600 they raised in sponsorship! National Grid has extremely generously agreed to match £400 of this amount and the money has gone towards new tables and chairs for the lounge. Special thanks also go to Cyril John for supplying both fence treatment and brushes for the event.Meanwhile, an army of eager helpers were busy clearing and cleaning the clubhouse. Walls were plastered, doors fitted, cupboards built and everything that didn’t move was painted. Throughout the day, workers were sustained by a stream of drinks from the kitchen, kindly provided by Neville Cooke on behalf of Somerfield, along with countless cakes and burgers. If this wasn’t enough, outside, wet grown-ups were busy setting fence posts, renovating the scoreboard, repairing fence panels, clearing weeds, laying concrete, and much more. The day concluded with a gathering in the rejuvenated clubhouse for an absolutely superb curry supplied by Mr Mohammed Kashime of the Masala Indian Takeaway on the High Street. It has to be said that this donation was generous in the extreme and the quality was a credit to Mr Kashime and all the staff at the Masala. GroundForce 2008 was a resounding success in terms planned work but more importantly, I’m sure you’ll agree that the event further kindled the all-inclusive and friendly atmosphere of our club. For the record that the gable of the clubhouse is now a ‘Dove’ colour and the front door is not green - it is Juniper! We do have a few more projects planned for the near future; so don’t be surprised if you hear from me again.I would like to end by saying a huge thank you to all involved for making the day so productive and so much fun.Best Wishes Andy McParland.
