Transition From Junior To Senior PlayerSome young cricketers have now already had an 8 to 10 year involvement in game and many haven't developed because their clubs don't address this issue. Many clubs find that they don't have the coaching resources to cope with this age group and often will leave youngster alone and let them go their own way. At Barrow Town we have recognised this and look to include talented players into the senior training and coaching sessions. In addition we have coaches who are able to work with those players who just want to limit their cricket to age group cricket with their friends. This is the clubs way of striking a balance between allowing talented players reach their potential and play at the level they aspire to and also allowing a squad of friends to develop that keeps the essence of what Barrow Town is about that is a local village community club. Youngsters should enter this period of development fully equipped with the all skills and the mental toughness needed to progress further, only if that was the case! Few clubs have the experience coach in charge who will push there squad along. Often youngsters will drop out at this stage, after years already in the game they have become stale and find other things to occupy their time. The challenge to the club is to maintain interest, develop talented players and work to ensure that we have enough players to sustain and grow the club into the future. It is often said that we the current coaches and players are merely passing through but the long term future of the club is in our hands. At Barrow Town we have recognised this and are actively working to develop young players for the future of the club and the game. At this stage our good young players are now joining the senior ranks and the way they are brought into the squads is an area that needs to be understood correctly. Often juniors will now lose their way under pressure of performance against seniors and more established players. Time needs to be given to a newcomer when he steps up. At Barrow Town we look to introduce youngsters to senior cricket via the Sunday XI and also for those that have reached the appropriate skill and maturity levels the 2ndXI. Within these sides are coaches and also senior players who have played at a high level but are also committed to help develop young players. They were once young players themselves and understand the pressures and trials that can come in the step up to senior cricket. The end game as far as Barrow Town is concerned is that the game is played by all for fun. Enjoyment is key and maintaining an environment where everyone is able to do reach their potential and enjoy playing with friends is an important foundation stone on which the club is built.
