MATCH REPORT V THORPE ARNOLD U11

A cold and damp Friday night saw the first U11 hardball fixture of the season at home to Thorpe Arnold. Skipper for the night, Billy Wright, won the toss and put Thorpe Arnold in to bat. Alex Carruthers opened the bowling with Sam Nightingale, and held the first Thorpe Arnold pair to 11 runs. The second pair came in to bat and faced George Griffiths and, making his U11 debut, Nathan Maloney. George bowled a tight first over and off his fifth ball, wicket keeper Ben Pole took off the bails to get Barrow’s first wicket of the season. In Nathan’s first over, he bowled the Thorpe Arnold batsman with his fourth ball. George’s second over started with a wicket, and he continued to complete a wicket maiden. In came the third Thorpe Arnold pair to face was Billy Wright and Owen Chamberlain. Billy opened with an over of prodigious spin and Owen followed him with an over of tight bowling. The Thorpe Arnold batsmen decided that now was the time to give the ball some air! Billy and Owen completed their overs, and after 12 of their 16 overs had a net score of 244. The last Thorpe Arnold pair came in to bat, and faced Aaron Watts’s first over. Some free hitting by the batsmen saw 6 runs off the first 4 balls of the over. Undeterred, Aaron bowled the fifth ball, and an excellent intercept and a calm head saw a run out by Sam Nightingale. The very next ball saw the bails flying as the Thorpe Arnold batsman was bowled. The skipper elected to bowl debutant Nathan for a third over. The Thorpe Arnold batsmen again opened their arms to score some much needed runs. Aaron’s second over saw another wicket fall as he clean bowled the batsman. The last over was bowled by Billy Wright, and despite some beguiling spin, he was unable to take a wicket. Thorpe Arnold closed their innings on 276.Barrow Town opened their innings with Sam Nightingale and Ben Pole. The innings got off to a good start, for Thorpe Arnold that is, with a double-wicket maiden. Ben and Sam fought back well in the next three overs, scoring 28 runs, with 3 fours and some good singles. Next, in came Billy Wright and George Griffiths. They continued to score well and made 27 of some good Thorpe Arnold bowling. Owen Chamberlain and Aaron Watts faced some excellent bowling from the Thorpe Arnold attack, and struggled to score 13 runs, but an unfortunate run out and a wicket from an excellent delivery saw their valiant effort reduced to a net 3 runs. The final pair, Alex Carruthers and Nathan Maloney, strode out to the wicket needing 28 to win. Thorpe Arnold’s bowlers looked very strong and kept the final pair down to 20 runs. The team played a well contested opening match for the U11s team, losing only 3 wickets, and scoring a creditable 269 to Thorpe Arnold’s 276.
