U7 to U10 Player DevelopIt is often said that great cricketers are born not made. However with the right coaching and development all players can improve. There are key stages in a young player’s development and if you find the raw material the talent at a very young age you have a great responsibility either as a parent or coach to help develop that youngster. Barrow Town will accommodate youngsters into this group as long as they have a good hand to eye coordination and they are able to concentrate. The ECB Model which uses the Long Term Athlete Development Plan (LTAD) is a fantastic method of getting them started and aids with Agility, Balance & Coordination. However to introduce the cricket specific skills at a very young age will pay a dividends in the long term. Once you find that a youngster who has core skills you can introduce the technical developments to their game but don't expect immediate progress, however each child learns at a different pace. At Barrow Town we have a number of very talented players and we monitor closely the progress of players. If we identify a player that is ready for progression to playing and training at the next level then we will look to offer the opportunity to that youngster. Barrow Town operates a player pathway of development from softball cricket through the hard ball cricket. Talented younger players are allowed to progress when they are ready to do so and given a chance based on ability not age. By identifying talent earlier we are also able to bring in specialised coaching to hone and develop playing skills. Message to Parents If you think your youngster is talented even at a very young age, get them into a club that can offer the correct base for development. Preferably a Clubmark Club where they have a sound welfare & child protection policy, like Barrow Town CC. Parents often just join the closest club to their home without checking out the extent of the clubs structure. Within many clubs there are coaches working with young children but very few really understand the importance of that early development. The correct club is the key to a childs development.
