Strong Start for Senior Teams

Strong Start for Senior Teams

Gareth Hughes20 Apr - 18:58

Our 3 Saturday teams all claim maximum points on a successful first weekend of the season

After many months of waiting, indoor practice and some tentative outdoor activity our senior teams started their league season in style registering 3 wins from 3.

First up were the 3s who had the bitter sweet emotions of a walk over victory when Warrington 4th team had to drop out on Thursday, much to the frustration of the strong XI selected by captain Delaney. They get another opportunity to start their season proper next Saturday at home to Port Sunlight 3rd XI.

The Second team were at home to Wilmslow and, after captain Dwyer won the toss and elected to bowl first in damp conditions, put up a very disciplined display to bowl Wilmslow out for 121 with some excellent bowling backed up by superb fielding and catching. Vadella and both Andrews brothers were the pick of the bowlers supported well by the rest of the attack. 121 was never likely to be enough and after Dwyer and Afridi J had taken 75 from the 10 overs the game was all but over allowing Lord and Andrews M to calmly knock off the final runs for an 8 wicket win.

The 1st XI travelled to Oakmere to kick off there campaign. After a chaotic warm up with lost boots, lack of cricket balls and general lateness impacting captain Randle's plans, the 1st XI lost the toss and were asked to Bat. After a tricky start on a difficult wicket Randle and new overseas player Malthus took the score to 69-2 and it looked like a strong total could be achieved. But a steady flow of wickets and some good bowling meant that only a late cameo from Darren Leach on debut took Barrow to a total of 147 ao. After a perfect start in response with an early wicket a piece for both Green and Leach the game seemed to be slipping away as Oakmere slowly moved to 96-2. However a flurry of quick wickets from Barrow's spinners turned the tide and the 1st XI were able to quickly wrap up the tail and seal a 27 run win.

So a strong start to the season.

This week sees the start of the junior season with junior training on Tuesday (u15s/u16s) and Friday (u9s/u11s/u13s). The bar and shop will be open on Friday night so please come down and celebrate the start of the weekend with a cold (or hot) beverage!

Also on Friday, the Barrownesses start their campaign at Doddleston vs Northwich after a winter of hard work, it should be a great season for them!

The 1st XI are at home to Heaton Mersey on Saturday whilst the 2nd XI play away at Woodford and the 3s host Port Sunlight.
